The Australian landscape is at the heart of all my work.

Portrait of Rachel Burns

recent work

These recent works blur the edges between reality, fantasy and a dreamlike state. Somnambulant figures emerge wandering through these imaginary spaces. The figures in the paintings are used to incorporate a narrative; a dialogue between man and his environment. The works capture a frozen or intimate moment between the observer and the landscape.

I use colour  to evoke mood and poetry in the paintings.

shed series

The paintings are visual maps of my surrounding rural environment. They describe cultivated areas of land and capture man-made scars on the landscape. Blocks of colour come together to form landscape patchworks.

The highly textural surfaces represent different landmarks from the rural environment: ploughed soil, burnt stubble, bare earth, mown grass. I often use multiple perspectives to include aerial images of the land and the distant horizon.
